Perfect Pairing: Vladimir Kanevsky + Serge Sorokko Gallery

“In over 30 years in the art business, this will be the first time that my gallery will be exhibiting decorative arts,” says gallery owner Serge Sorokko who will host the world premiere of Ukraine-born American sculptor Vladimir Kanevsky’s latest works in his San Francisco gallery on November 13. The exhibition, “The Porcelain Splendor of Vladimir Kanevsky,” will include over 20 of the artist’s signature lifelike porcelain flower sculptures, including his celebrated black hollyhocks, white hydrangeas, lilies of the valley and wild daisies, and runs through January 3, 2015. “I think the flowers connect my modern side with my retro side,” says Kanevsky whose sculptures have generated a following among tastemakers worldwide including Valentino, Daphne Guinness, Carolyn Roehm, as well as the late Oscar de la Renta and Jacqueline Onassis. Originally an architect from the former Soviet Union, Kanevsky produced his first porcelain sculpture—based on an 18th century melon tureen—for New York-based interior designer Howard Slatkin. The designer called the work, “improvement upon perfection.” Now Kanevksy has adopted the moniker for his newest collection of work, and the San Francisco exhibition will also serve as a sneak preview of the artist’s upcoming exhibition at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the spring of 2016.
