On a table in my house, a bit of spring blooms eternal: a long, slender peony branch made of porcelain and metal, the stem and leaves made of metal patinated a mottled shade of green, while the fragile pale-pink petals—like stiffened chiffon—are fashioned of fine porcelain. Artist Vladimir Kanevsky, born in Ukraine and based in New Jersey, concocts these and even more elaborate horticultural fantasias for collectors such as interior designer Charlotte Moss, philanthropist Deeda Blair, and tastemaker Carolyne Roehm. The sculptor’s latest works are on display in “The Porcelain Splendor of Vladimir Kanevsky: New Sculptures,” an exhibition at San Francisco’s Serge Sorokko Gallery. Prices for the entirely handmade wonders range from $8,500 to $150,000.
