Beautiful People Dept.

Last Tuesday night, several Pulse! editors got to rub elbows with the glitterati in San Francisco. The occasion was the book release party for photographer JIM MARSHALL's tome, 'NOT FADE A WAY' (see below and the current issue of Pulse! for a review of the book). The event, held at the Serge Sorokko gallery, was indeed a star-studded affair. Marshall lived up to everything we had been told (or is that warned?). Attendees ranged from fellow photographers like Baron Wolman and Robert Altman to elderly ladies in mink coats who were surely part of the S.F. socialite set. Chet Helms and Carlos Santana were there, as was Sharon Stone. People-watching aside, the photographs were fantastic. Marshall was shooting at a time when access to musicians was unlimited and attitude was at a minimum. The subjects of his photos are natural, unmade up and unposed. A particular favorite was a shot of John Lennon taken backstage at Candlestick Park in 1966. Lennon is lost in thought, obviously unaware that the photo was being taken. A cigarette hangs from his hand and an odd label attached to his shirt says Moses. It's so non "rock star"-ish. Special thanks to Jay Blakesberg and Carolyn Rustigian for their many introductions.
