Rocking Out at the St. Francis

Pat Steger, San Francisco Chronicle, December 19, 1997

Ingrid and Reuben Hills' rock 'n' roll party Tuesday for George and Charlotte Shultz was a hit. Guests had been asked to dress rock 'n' roll for the dinner-dance at the St. Francis. Everyone had their own spin on what that was, from George's Buddy Holly to Gavin Newsom's dark suit.

Fritz Jewett and son George III wore identical Bono-type wigs and platform shoes; Stephene McKeen was a very hairy Cher; Candy Hamm was a preppy college student; and John Traina was a rock star with two dates, Ann Moller Caen and Frances Bowes (husband John was out of town). Marion Cope wore a chic black dress, saying her single-strand pearl necklace was very '50s. An eclectic evening: The menu consisted of Ingrid's favorite German fare, including the best wursts, and Bill Hopkins' band played Latin music for dancing. Viva, Ingrid and Reuben.

Before heading for the Hillses', Sally Debenham, with a beehive wig, and her husband, Warren, in Elvis hair, were among those at Cartier for a champagne and caviar fix. There were a few whispers of "Who are they?" from the crowd, but a bigger stir was caused by newsman Phil Bronstein arriving with actress Sharon Stone, who looked gorgeous. Cartier's Wes Carroll sighed, "I didn't get to say hello to her, but I got to say goodbye." At least you'll always have "Basic Instinct" together.

Sharon Stone Smiled for photographer Jim Marshall

Phil and Sharon went on to the Serge Sorokko Gallery on Grant for the opening of a show by rock 'n' roll (talk about coincidence) photographer Jim Marshall. Jim signed copies of his book "Not Fade Away." He'll be back tomorrow to sign some more.
