(Translated from Russian)

An exhibition of the British painter Stephen Sumner entitled Later After: New Paintings opened on May 18, 2006, in the Tsereteli Galleries of The Moscow Museum of Modern Art. This exhibition has been organized by The Academy of Art of the Russian Federation and The Moscow Museum of Modern Art, with support from Serge Sorokko Gallery (San Francisco, USA). This is Sumner's first solo exhibition in Moscow.

Stephen Sumner was born in Blackpool, England, in 1956. He trained at the Black-pool College of Art and Leeds University, later becoming a graphic artist and art director in London. He devoted himself full time to painting in 1994, and in 1996 moved to New York City, where he currently lives.

Stephen Sumner is an artist obsessed with light and what light can express. The artist expresses the beauty of light and air creating illusory landscapes that are both imaginary and mysterious. Sumner's landscapes are born in his memory, expressing a certain universality. They are contemplative and convey finer layers of mood and the condition of the soul. They are first and foremost introspective. Stephen Sumner is a subtle colorist who achieves optical effects through a combination of shades of color and their interplay. He has had many exhibitions including most recently at the British Consulate in New York, Kenny Schacter Gallery, New York, and others.

The exhibition of his work will be on view until June 11, 2006.
