JAMES BROWN, Serge Sorokko, 430 West Broadway, near Prince Street, (212) 941-8888 (through Feb. 5). Tasteful but dreary grid-based abstractions in antique frames. Mr. Brown arranges rows of irregular spots or found paper or fabric rectangles and adds blobby gestures here and there. The pictures have an aged look, as though they had been moldering in the basement of a French chateau since the 1930's (Johnson).
