Massimo Vitali Italian, 1944

Biographie

Born 1944, Como, Italy; lives and works in Lucca, Italy.

After studying photography in London in the 1960s, Massimo Vitali embarked on a career as a photojournalist for various Italian and European magazines.  In the 1980s, he worked as a filmmaker for television and cinema. From the mid-1990s onward, Vitali turned his attention to photography as a means for artistic research and as a tool for portraying scenes of the world.

Vitali is well known for his large-scale color images of crowds of people in settings such as beaches and markets. Such images document contemporary life, examining patterns of people's interaction with their environments. Vitali's richly colored and detailed images display an interesting balance between human activity and the natural world.

The work of Massimo Vitali is held in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Tate Modern, London, among many others.
