Lorna Simpson American, 1960

Biographie

Born 1960, Brooklyn, New York; lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Lorna Simpson holds a BFA degree in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York, and an MFA degree from the University of California, San Diego.

In her photographs, Simpson began exploring ethnic divisions in the 1980s era of multiculturalism. Her most notable works combine words with photographs of anonymously cropped images of women and, occasionally, men. While the pictures may appear straightforward, the text will often confront the viewer with the underlying connotation of racial intolerance.

Simpson's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Miami Art Museum; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. She  has participated in such important international exhibitions as the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany. In 2010, Simpson was the recipient of the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award in Art.
