Miguel Condé Mexican/American, 1939
Born 1939, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Miguel Condé is a Mexican figurative painter, draftsman, and etcher. Born in Pittsburgh, he split his childhood with his father in Mexico and mother in the United States. He currently lives and works between Madrid and Sitges, Spain.
Miguel Condé studied anatomy with Stephen Rogers Peck in New York and etching techniques in Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. His colorful paintings and drawings are speckled with leitmotifs and dramatis personae: characters that instill a visual language that Condé uses to poetically express his relationship with art history and the world around him.
Condé's complex cultural heritage is reflected in his style and conceptual content. He deals with the absurd and enigmatic. He takes influence from the Byzantine artists, yet is deeply rooted in the political and social issues of our generation.
Condé's work is in major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, the Biblothèque Nacional de España, Madrid, and the Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Latin American Fellowship.
