The Serge Sorokko Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of selected works by James Brown.
Brown's primitive figuration has antecedents in Dubuffet and the Cobra group, whose work Brown encountered while living in Paris. Brown has absorbed a variety of influences - aesthetic, religious, anthropological - and distilled them to his own spontaneous form - language. Brown's earth colors share the contemporary palette of Jedd Garet or David Salle, but his primary dialectic is between Catholic symbolism and African mythology.

The art of James Brown is a tortuous journey through the present age. His oeuvre reflects his awareness of this many layered reality and tells a tale that unfolds in iconic fragments, material remains, and elegant and mysterious symbols. These are works that are made to talk to the soul. Brown has had numerous solo exhibitions in museums and galleries all over the world and participated in the Venice Biennale in 1985.
