Serge Sorokko Gallery to Host Venetian Artist, Master Jeweler Attilio Codognato’s Global Premiere Exhibition
San Francisco, California – November XX, 2016 – The Serge Sorokko Gallery has announced its upcoming exhibition: Coveted: Jewels by Codognato, Venetian Master Jeweler Attilio Codognato’s first ever exhibition outside of museums. The installation will coincide with the House’s 150th anniversary, opening December 8, 2016 with an exclusive celebration that evening.
Codognato’s seminal exhibition is comprised of nearly fifty iconic works from the House’s archives and Mr. Codognato’s personal collection. Often featuring serpents and skulls in combinations of gold, platinum and precious stones, Codognato’s exquisite pieces have developed a dedicated following that has included 19th and 20th century royal families of Europe and style icons such as Maria Callas, Coco Chanel, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis among others.
Casa Codognato, founded in Venice by Simeone Codognato in 1866, has been in the hands of his greatgrandson Attilio, who, since 1958, has established a cult following of his own. Building on the house’s classical theme of memento mori, Codognato has influenced and inspired other artists and designers over the last several decades including John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, and is collected by arbiters of style such as fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, performer Elton John, Princess Firyal of Jordan, model Kate Moss, fashion designer Tom Ford, and actress Nicole Kidman to name a few.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be showcasing Codognato’s exquisite works of art,” stated Serge Sorokko. “This exhibition is both culturally relevant and deeply personal. Attilo is an influential contemporary artist who, for over half a century, has been creating unique objets d’art of astounding beauty.”
Jewelry exhibitions are more commonly found in museums; it is rare to find works by a jeweler in a contemporary art gallery. Such exhibitions are more likely presented in world-renowned institutions such as the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which recently presented Cartier and Bulgari, or most notably JAR at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Attilio Codognato belongs in that company. For his outstanding contribution to the arts, the government of France bestowed upon Codognato the prestigious honor of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2012.
“Apart from museums, I have always been reluctant to exhibit outside of my place in Venice,” Codognato said. “Serge and Tatiana Sorokko, who are among my most dedicated collectors, have been encouraging me to bring my art to their San Francisco gallery. After more than two decades their persistence has paid off, and I have very happily acquiesced.”
Coveted: Jewels by Codognato will make its global premiere on December 8th with a private reception from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibition will run through January 7th at the Serge Sorokko Gallery at 55 Geary Street in San Francisco.
