James Galanos

Born 1924, Philadelphia, PA; lives in Los Angeles, CA.

American fashion designer James Galanos was born in Philadelphia in 1924. He attended Bridgeton High School in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and continued on to graduate in 1943 from the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York. After completing his formal education, he moved to Paris, easily finding work with a series of fashion designers. Galanos eventually returned to the United States to continue designing for such luminaries as Hattie Carnegie in New York and Jean Louis in Hollywood.

In 1951 Galanos opened his own boutique called Galanos Originals in Los Angeles. In the following years his work became internationally acclaimed for his extensive use of hand beading and luxurious silk fabrics over full-loose dresses and chiffon coats. Galanos's dedicated clients included singer Diana Ross, actress Rosalind Russell, and former First Lady Nancy Reagan, among many others.

Galanos officially retired from fashion in 1998 and turned his attention to his other passion - photography. Known for his superb workmanship, Galanos uses the same materials and tools to create his impeccable photographic images. These are primarily abstract compositions constructed with ribbons, various fabrics, and colored papers. Photographed in evocative light, these images are genuinely original, refined and wholly consistent with Galanos' world-renowned aesthetic.

James Galanos has received numerous awards including the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award and he was inducted into Seventh Avenue's Fashion Walk of Fame in New York, July 2001. In 1997, he had a retrospective exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Galanos' designs have also been exhibited at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, "Galanos—25 Years" in 1976, the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Palm Springs Museum of Art in 2006.
